Over the past few months 20 Dalston Lane has been transformed from a derelict shop into an urban food hub, a cafe and arts venue complete with mini aquaponic fish farms, rooftop chicken coops, indoor allotments and polytunnel.

The project – FARM: Shop is the brainchild of Something & Son an urban agriculture centre based at 20 Dalston Lane, E8. It will include a community cafe, events venue and workspace, offering fresh produce directly traceable to a farm or grown in the shop itself. They aim to grow as much food as they can in every inch of the building and serve the produce in the shop cafe and sell to nearby restaurants.

When we first heard about the project we thought it was a great concept right on our doorstep and wanted to get involved. Looking at our skills we approached the guys behind the shop and offered to help improve their website and online visibiltiy.

So over the last few months we have been working with the guys to get a brand new website together and are aiming to get the site live by the end of February to coincide with their official opening.

The shop is one of several projects that has benefited from Hackney Council’s Art in Empty Spaces initiative which is supported through central government funding. Over the next few weeks we will be working in our spare time to get the site (and the shop) ready for end of Feb.

If you’re interested in finding out a little more about the shop they are currently running tours at the weekend from 11am-6pm and are always looking for eager volunteers. You can also follow them on Twitter and Facebook to stay up to date on the latest developments and find out about events coming up inside the space.
